Keep On Going

Well NaNoWriMo is over I only made 14,296 words on my computer I suppose I could have cheated and just copied my story so many times but I will just keep on writing until I reach 50000 or I am satisfied the story is done.
But in the meanwhile back to knitting my niece's poncho and the lap robe.

NaNoWriMo time again

So it's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) time again. 50,000 words in 30 days. Halfway through and I am behind at 8008 words but I am slowly catching up. Not going to say what my novel about. Will say it's sort of a fantasy romance. But I have ideas and a whole big cast, and blustery weather to write about. ( blustery means it is happening to me here and now which means it happens to my characters. Heck i've given them ice storms, snowstorms and power outages in years past. I write the book therefore I am their god.)

On and Off the Needles
Still working on my nieces poncho. Got another circular needle to work the other half. So I can figure out how it is going to work. Next time I agree to something like this I am going to go look at patterns with whoever is receiving the knit object. but it does look nice but you would think if i started it months ago shouldn't it be finished by now or before now.

Behind the wheel
Okay I am angry and frustrated. I blame it on the economy and some of the knitters in the area. Two shops both within walking distance of each other and the one sells it's knitting stuff to someone else. I happened to love the Twisted Ewe's knitting stuff. I like Diva but I have great memories of knitting and spinning and talking with Pat in the Twisted Ewe. And now they are just needlework and cross-stitch. Bah. Good thing the next knitting group is within walking distance if I lose my temper with them I can just stomp off home.

Inspiration

The Write Life
Inspiration can come from the strangest places. Writing wise it can come from things like books short stories, poems, magazine articles, newspaper articles, pictures etc. Some of my strange sources of inspiration have been from things like video games. I admit I like play simulation games like the Sims, Virtual Villagers, Civilization III, etc.

Just yesterday after trying a demo of Virtual Villagers 5: New Believers on my iPod iTouch. Okay summary of the beginning is necessary. One of your little villagers has found a unfamiliar mask on a forbidden path (got to love those f words forbidden even unfamiliar) so the chief sends 5 people to explore the path. Your people get captured by heathens. So one goal is to convert the heathens to believe in the guiding hand (you). But I thought what if they get captured for something else. Maybe the heathens are getting old and dying off maybe they need new blood to reproduce? That's what it inspired me to think.  Well that and another idea I have. But I still have to get some more inspiration before I can even outline that idea. I don't think it's quite ready yet.

On and Off the needles
Still working on niece's poncho. I hope the weather stays warm for her for awhile. the poncho seems to be a bit slow going. maybe I should find something else to work on to relieve the boredom of stockinet stitches.

Behind the Wheel
Finally spun up the Kool Aid dyed wool. It is a bit faded but still looks pretty great.

In the Dyepot
During some rain we had about 2 weeks ago I had an idea for dye job. First all green and then some drops of blue and purple like rain on evergreens. Though might require me to spin, knit stockinet stitch like those things of sock yarn (which I am doing with some white wool, might need to spin some more up for this idea) then dye it up. Hopefully this sunny warm weather will continue so I can try and do it this week before fall actually sets in.

Editing

On and Off the Needles
I am still working on my niece's poncho, knitting the edging. I need to start working on the main part sometime soon.
Some grey and aqua wool spun and plied together.

Behind the wheel
I have been busy spinning some last few weeks. spun and plied the gray and aqua. just love the look. the silver shines and the aqua looks like a pond. also plied the blue and green, wool and silk. need to take a picture of that. now I am spinning the greens that I plan to use on my nieces poncho as mentioned above.

The Write Life
August and Camp NaNoWriMo are almost over and I am trying to catch up to the word count now. Also checked out Self Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King. I probably should have checked it out later because it has caused me to delete a few words. No more spitting and growling lines for my characters.
But I am using exercises from Writer's Digest to try and get my word count up, along with adding scenes and description.
September I am going to be taking a break from writing. October is going to be outlining for November's Nanowrimo and maybe editing then.

Crossing the Finishing Line and Second Wind

The Write Life
Well Camp NaNoWriMo is over with for the year. Yesterday I had a number of ideas with long outlines hopefully good indicators that when written out that it would give me a lot of words. I had something like 5000 words to get to the 50000. And instead of posting my word count every few hundred words I decided to do it when I passed the various thousand letter marks, 47k, 48k, 49k and then the victorious 50000 words I copied the words and then pasted it in for verification.

Though truth be told about 6 minutes to midnight I was almost at 49k so I simply copied and pasted over a thousand of the previous words and put it in for verification. Yes I know that was cheating but I was pretty sure what I had in mind would fill in when I cut out the copy.

The other night I watched a movie my little sister had recommended to me, Lost in Austen. Girl of our time finds an entrance to the Bennett's house in Regency England. And do not ask me who are the Bennets. Alright I will refresh your memory, they are the family father, mother and five sisters in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I love how the writer L. Hamre looks at what might make some of the characters tick, explaining their behavior.

Edging, sparkly, and mysteries

On and Off the Needles
Well had knitted up a bit of niece's poncho with a leaf edge pattern but since it has some binding off , mom and I decided to knit the leaf edge separate.
Behind the Wheel
The turquoise I had spun up on my drop spindle and put on a carboard tube from either toilet paper or paper towel. (How is that for recycling.) Finally plied half of the turquoise and some of the gray wool together. It is still beautiful, though I wonder how much I have since there is still quite a bit of each to be plied together. Maybe a scarf is too small of a project for it. but I will wait and see. Also still have to spin and ply the light and dark greens for a personal touch for the niece's poncho.
The Write Life
Well Camp NaNoWriMo is almost over. I have 36, 133 words so far in my mystery novel. Had trouble getting going last week. One of my cabin mates suggested a surprise visit from family and bring up something new. I brought up something I needed to work on, a missing key.
It also brought up my main character's past and someone from that past to cause trouble. I suppose the rest of the week might need to be focused on bringing the mystery to a close. I have heard how writers know who the murderer is when they start. quarter of the way in, I had some idea. Though I knew I could hint at other suspects. Now that prime suspect is being overshadowed and another suspect is coming to my sight. Even I maybe surprised by the murderer's identity.

Something I've never done before

The Write Life
I have attempted to write a mystery before, even just a story. But I have never really finished it where it was solved. I have only started them. But this time with a word count of 50 k I and some reading material from the library I maybe actually get to the point where my main character solves a mystery. The book How to Write a Damn Good Mystery by James N. Frey. He talks about two outlines, one of what the reader sees and another of what happens behind the scenes. Would help if the author knows where the murderer is at times.  Note to self: Outlines can be very helpful. Other good things in the book is journal entries for characters and getting to know the murderer. (How scary can it be to get a letter from the murderer.) Sort of like a getting to know you section. Helps you understand their motivation and reasoning for the horrible thing they did. I may have to check his How to Write a Damn Good Novel from the library and if I feel like it I'll buy How to Write a d Damn Good Novel II from the Writer's Workshoppe and I can donate it to the library. But later after August is over and then I can also see about some fiction reading. Take a break from writing for awhile. thought I still have to finish first my mystery and then my other Camp NaNoWriMo novel, Forest of Flowers.

Another helpful book is Writing Mysteries A Handbook by the Mystery Writers of America edited by Sue Grafton. I used to have it before we sold it at a garage sale. Along with book on poisons, crime scene investigation (Was CSI on the air in 2002? I don't know) guns, etc. Mom told the lady that bought all of them we expect a good mystery book. That would have been interesting to know her name so we could buy her book when it came out if she did write it. Has lots of good parts, one I found helpful was on scenes of violence. How do you do a murder scene if you want? Do it without showing who the murderer is. Talked about how victims of stabbing or shooting 'rarely see the objective view of what happened to them.'

So I might have to write the murder scenes just to add to my word count.

More NaNoWrimo

The Write Life
Well got 50k for the July's Camp NaNoWriMo and now we are into August. Last month it was a fantasy/science fiction, Forest of Flowers. This month I am trying my hand at writing a mystery, A Fine Thread (name subject to change.) With knitting and spinning in it, so just to boost word count I might add a recipe and knitting pattern like all those other knitting mysteries do.

One of the great things about August is we have the community of a cabin, sharing with other writers. You can choose more than one cabin setting; no cabin, writers the same age, same genre (What I chose), surprise me and select your own cabin mates. So I can hear how good or bad my other cabin mates are doing. Get encouragement, ask opinions.

On and Off the Needles
Finished one sachet just yesterday and gave it to a neighbor's daughter who is going back to Chicago. She said thank you just this morning.

Got yarn for another poncho for one of my nieces, shades of green with some brown. Got her approval on the color, her favorite color is green right now.

And since one of the local yarn stores are having a retirement sale (the owner and shop are retiring) got some gray lace yarn, and some nice books and magazines at good prices. The lace yarn I plan to make into a shawl to go with a black dress I have.

But I still have to finish the shawls for my mom and other niece.

In the Dyepot
Well the wool I had dyed in my last post was so faded I over dyed it emptying one bottle of red and some of the grape. So we will see how it does.
The rest of the white wool I think I might spin up quickly before I dye it. Might make it a little easier and not as messy. I can only hope.

Now, do it now!

Well it was a sunny day. I had most everything. Just one quick run to the grocery store for Saran Wrap and was able to do some Kool Aid dyeing.
1 ounce of wool, 8 bottles of water with sport tops, kool aid (seen from top left, grape, blue raspberry lemonade, lemon lime, pink lemonade, either cherry or black cherry?, lemonade, orange and tropical punch) some gloves (unless you want kool aid stained hands) and spray bottle of vinegar.
step 1 cover table with newspaper and saran wrap,
step 2 get wool wet
3. spray wool with kool aid. I also sort of try to work or squish the color in.
4. spray with vinegar
5. wrap
6 I set it out in the sun. Don't have a spare pot for steaming the kool aid in yet. Would like to try building a pizza box solar oven sometime thought.

colors or flavors used this time, grape, raspberry lemonade, and pink lemonade.
On the needles

This last weekend was the Sequim Lavender Festival. So I have been working on knitting some more heart shaped sachets. I use various color schemes in Socks that Rock from Blue Mountain fibers. started one found I had another half way done, tried to finish the other one and ran out of yarn for it but will add what I have.
Mom also sort of volunteered to knit some so I got her some yarn and made a copy of the pattern I use. We went Saturday, looking for some replacement lavender plants and also some smells good. Saw a distilling process, got some smelly soaps, some more dried buds and a cute little pink and purple lavender plant
The Write Life
Camp NaNoWriMo is halfway through and I'm a few thousand away from the 25 k words. But oh well still lots of ideas and I might see about doing a little adding and editing.

Catching up Double time

Okay long time no post. but here goes.

On my needles
Mom's Meadow flower shawl, thanks goodness for lifelines. Meadow flower shawl for my littlest niece. started a shawl for myself, complicated lace pattern. Will tell you it's name later when I find the pattern. Also Labyrinth socks from Socks from the Toe up by Wendy Johnson. And my vampire boyfriend socks from Knitty.
Behind the Wheel
on my Ashford traditional I'm spinning up some silk merino in two shade of green and one shade of blue in an attempt to blend colors together. Also spun up some wool on my drop spindles. Last week I had discovered how nice the gray wool I have at the cottage would go with the aqua and lilac wool at Twisted ewe so got an ounce of each and spun that up on my drop spindles. Will finish up the silk/merino on my wheel before I spin up the gray to ply with the aqua and lilac.
The Write Life
I had to decide to join along with Camp NaNoWriMo writing 50k words in 31 days. Maybe a little easier with an extra day. but summer also means going outside a lot and July also means Tour deFleece, the spinning while cyclists are racing on bicycles in France. I am trying my best but I am a little bit behind on both. Thanks to having getting Netflixs I have been watching a lot of Anime during the day. But have done some drawings of characters and places for inspiration.

Gift Cards etc.

I'm oh so happy. Got some stuff for my spinning and knitting I can actually use. a small scale and a gift card from KnitPicks. Used the gift card and going to see about weighting out some roving I have to spin up . I wonder what if any difference it will make.

Now if only the weather would warm up so I could do some dyeing. but for now I'll work on finishing some knitting projects and do a little spinning.

Also been typing up some of my writing, various bits of short stories or novels to maybe see about publication some day.

The Play's the Thing

Well it's April which means Script Frenzy attempting to write a 100 page script whether for stage, film, television or comic book.
I've started mine, a stage play based on an idea I've had for years. At first I was thinking a musical but the story has turned a bit into a murder mystery drama so no singing so far not to say I might add one little song somewhere later along with a possibility of a few jokes to lighten it up.  So far I have 17 pages and hopefully more in order to catch up to the daily goal which would be 24.33. Don't really have a outline but I have got one act pretty much done and started on the second.
I'm pretty good with dialogue and not always good with descriptions so it might be helpful.

Haven't done much spinning but have attempted knitting up some lace weight yarn into a lace shawl but the pattern is a bit complicated but I keep trying.

Finished at last

Off the Needles
Finally finished dad's birthday socks. so now back to the wrist warmers, shawls and lap robe.

February goes out like a lion

On the Needles
Well it was a cold February or the end of it was. The 22nd started with rain and hail or sleet mix, had more sleet or hail so much that it looked like a covering of snow. I tried covering up my legs with a prayer shawl but wanted to wrap it around. So now one of my projects is a lap robe made with ...Lion Brand Home Spun. (gasp! oh horror!) so homespun that might have gotten donated to the Goodwill is being put in use. Mom suggested knitting some others to donate to retirement homes and such. So I might see about doing that after I finish this one. Got seven color sections done, green, yellow, orange, red, olive green and oatmeal, now I'm on a second section of yellow. I will try and take a picture. But the pattern is since prayer shawls are 57 or 60 stitches across, so the lap robe is 120 stitches across, hoping to make it the 60 inches long so far I'm a third of the way there so we'll see if I need any more Homespun.

Then working on mom's shawl in the raspberry wool in the Meadow Flowers pattern by Donna Kay from Knitter's Stash. And then working on a smaller version for my neice, same yarn but in pink color since she like's pink.

And just now starting on a pair of socks for dad as a birthday present. Hopefully I will have them ready for him by this weekend but that may be too much for me to hope for.  I still have a pair of socks that I was making for him to finish I can only say that the pattern is more complicated than a pair of vanilla socks for my excuse.

Behind the Wheel
I will admit it has been awhile since I've done any spinning I still have a little bit black wool to finish spinning from a roving I got downtown, then to ply it up. Maybe sometime this week I'll get it taken care of.

The Write Life
March is NaNoEdMo National Novel Editing Month. Though after failing to get 100 hours editing done last year and last years novels from NaNoWrMo National Novel Writing Month I think I'll pass. Though I am still writing, working on my novels from November 2010 and some other writing ideas.

2011

2011
So the new year is here. I've made two resolutions. 1. Find a job 2. Lose some weight.
I have to say that Christmas was pretty good. My little sister and brother in law gave me their old macbook so I have my own laptop that I can tote around with me for writing and getting on the internet when I want. but so far I've only used it for writing. got quite a few new turtlenecks, some sweaters, some pants, two new purses, new socks, new gloves a thing of jelly beans which is now gone.
On and off the needles
Well mostly finished with Sari Silk Vest for my little sister, hopefully it's now big enough to fit her, I wouldn't look forward to having to make it bigger. have finished one leg warmer for me and have yet to finish the other. also started on a scarf. my after Christmas cold made me wish for a scarf to avoid sore throats.
Behind the wheel
Finished spinning the teal for my sister, though she's given us some yarn for her hat, mom says the teal and the teal and brown would be perfect for a man's sweater though. I still have the red and black to spin up for my True Blood socks.
The Write Life
Got a nice journal at Christmas, mom says its to encourage me to keep writing. so I have been using that while trying to type up parts of a story I have written up on different sheets of paper.
I seem to be in a Jane Austen mood, having watched Pride and Prejudice over a number of times along with Emma. And finished reading Mansfield Park, Wednesday. I blame it on my middle sister's reading choices, having a librarian for a husband she had checked out a sequel to Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy's Little Sister by C Allyn Pierson.  I read it Christmas eve night and Early Christmas morning when I couldn't sleep. I had looked into another sequel that I only saw but reading reviews on Amazon I think I'll be happy with Darcy's Sister.
